Instructions for Building Your Own Beads&String Presentation

What You Will Need

Beads&String will run on all platforms. These instructions explain how to create the string file using Netscape on Windows, but you may use a similar procedure for UNIX, Linux or Macintosh.

You will need access to a Web server. If you don't have access to your own, we will provide you with one for the purposes of this workshop. You will also need an ftp (file transfer protocol) program to transfer your files to the server.

Download the Beads&String Files

1. Click here to download the Beads&String files: webbeads.zip. Save the zip to the desktop.

2. Use an unzip program (WinZip, Aladdin Expander, etc.) to unzip it. You will end up with a directory on the desktop called 'webbeads'.

Create the Bookmark 'String' File

3. Locate your Web browser's bookmark file (On Windows, the file is located in the directory Program Files\Netscape\Users\username\ and is called bookmark.htm).

4. Rename that file bookmark0.htm (or something similar). This preserves your old bookmarks so you can restore them when you are done.

5. Close and then reopen your browser. This forces the browser to create a new, empty bookmark file that you can fill with the sites you choose. Go to the first Web site you've chosen to start your Beads&String lesson with. Add that site as a bookmark (Bookmarks|Add Bookmark). Repeat this step with each of the sites you have chosen to string together.

(For this demonstration, go back to http://harveyproject.org and i. click on Presentations, ii. click on the link to the SOL workshop, iii. return to this page and click on the list of demo links.)

6. Move the new bookmark file you created (bookmark.htm) into the webbeads directory on the desktop.

7. Go back to your browser's directory and rename the original bookmark file back to bookmark.htm .

Upload the Files to Your Server

8. Create a directory for your lesson on the server. For this demonstration, call it your last name (in lower case).

9. Select all the files in the webbeads directory (the Beads&String applet files and your bookmark file) and upload them to the Webserver directory you created in Step 8.

View the Results in Your Browser

10. Type the URL corresponding to the directory you created on the Webserver into the location window of your browser and press <Enter>.

Congratulations - you have just created your first Beads&String lesson!
